Tim Heffernan

Disarming

From one side of the partition
she looked up
from her tossed salad state
and mineralised water world
put down her implements
and guided him
a disarming smile.

On the other side
of the international cafe
he was diverted
from the impending roast
and wiping red wine
from his generous lips
he mouthed sweet nothings
in retaliation.

About the Poet Tim Heffernan

Tim Heffernan is a struggling poet/teacher (no priority order). He lives in the beautiful Wollongong suburb of Balgownie. His main poetic moment of fame is that his first published poems '(Windows & Return)' appeared in the Wagga Wagga Daily Advertiser in 1985, alongside the then equally unfamous Anthony Lawrence. Since then submissions have been as sporadic as the writing. I am blessed with three stunning girls, my wife Karen and my daughters Lucy (12) and Elizabeth (8). Over the past few years global events have prompted me to write again and to seek a wider audience. My poem 'Machined Words' was selected for the OZPOET Showcase theme ‘Technical, Mechanical and Electronic’ in January 2002 and my poem 'In my Tree' was accepted for publication as part of ‘POEMS ABOUT WAR’, a submission of over one hundred poems presented to John Howard on 5 March 2003… This poem was written during the Cold War freeze in the early 1980's, but does still offer hope and sanity for today.
