AUSTRALIAN ARTISTS & WRITERS FOR PEACE
some peace by Jenni Nixon

Jenni Nixon

some peace

this year the spathiphyllum (peace) lily flowered only once
gift from a friend who died from AIDS
children scream with delight in Elkington Park
a rusty sea gull cleans feathers stained in an oil spill
fruit bats fight for figs from the Moreton Bay

a local man all in black     on board the 442
as it weaves   down hilly roads    round tight corners
into narrow leafy streets    past cluttered workers' cottages
and million dollar town houses     plots and plans
secession for Balmain     an end to libraries
he writes methodically in his little black book
a useless waste of the public purse
the poor can have their words delivered in a van

at the local hospital fete     a skeleton stands guard
a nurse makes plaster casts on kids' arms for fun
in Sarajevo they've stopped shooting housewives
men talk of peace and plant trees

which of my neighbours
would snipers have shot today?
