Barbara De Franceschi

On the Mundi Mundi Plain

the body slips from journey
there are no tedious tracks of thrust or piston

a vastness drizzled in heat
a sudden frost as white as the risen moon
a silence … so spiritual it shouts blasphemy
when connection to land is denied

self is fossilised & memory chipped
like shells on the floor of this spinifex sea
sensitivity addicts
to solid flatness
smoothed by a secret dialogue with the wind

kangaroos scratch in ageless erosions
desert spawn await the pelt of rain
a circling hawk keeps me hunkered
between the blue high rise & black ants
building ochre cathedrals to worship the sun

caught in a gathering
that rolls across the ditches
in giant funnels playing tag
I am pulled to the earth's curvature
ghosting beyond the sight line

there is no confrontation
no struggle
I am now … as I have always been -
insignificant
to the beckon
where footprints leave no dent in time

as sky & ground converge
the union is complete
I give back
what I cannot keep
