World Peace Through Unity

Some whites they think their race is best,
some blacks think they're best too,
but we're all children of one God
no matter what our hue.
Like plants in spring's explosive burst
we all have need of rain
to grow into world unity,
a peaceful world to gain.

Some people think 'my nation's best,
my country right or wrong,'
but we are all world citizens,
to one earth we belong.
The mushroom clouds now billow high
and threaten us with doom.
'World citizens' emit a light
to help dispel the gloom.

Some women think their gender best,
some men for power yearn,
but equality is what we need
a world at peace to earn.
A bird with a defective wing
cannot fly much length,
but full flight surely will occur
with both wings at full strength.

The call now is to justice,
all people have their needs.
If some grow fat while others starve,
this hate and envy breeds.
If lions with the lambs will lay,
the strong share with the weak,
breezes of peace will softly blow
from vale to mountain peak.

So many paths can lead to God,
there is not only one,
all faiths can help us on our way
far better than can none.
There's many pathways through the dunes
all leading to the sea,
whichever path our feet may tread
let's walk in unity.

For unity, this is the key
to open our prisons gate:
The evil prison of strife and war.
Let us not hesitate
in this great new millennium,
united let us be,
then freed from states of endless hate,
a peaceful world we'll see.

About the Poet Keith Oliver

Keith Oliver was born in Perth WA in 1933. Although he only completed two years at high school he studied in later life, being awarded a BSc (multidisciplinary science) from Curtin University in 1994, with First Class Honours in Biological Science at Murdoch University in 1997. He has just completed (2002) a BA in philosophy, which included some creative writing units, at Edith Cowan University. He has had a lifelong interest in non-violence in general and world peace in particular and believes that with the advent of modern nuclear and biological weapons, world peace is not only desirable but is essential if civilisation, or perhaps even the human race itself, is to survive. He worked for peace through 'Scientists Against Nuclear Arms' and 'People for Nuclear Disarmament' and is a strong supporter of the, as yet very imperfect, United Nations Organization. He has a strong interest in world justice and world unity, seeing these as a prerequisite for world peace. Keith is also highly interested in the environment and the preservation and well being of all of life on earth, and in reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. Many of Keith's poems reflect his passion for peace and justice, although he writes on many other themes, with both serious and humorous poetry, in both traditional forms and in free verse.
