Jeff Guess

RSL

Gawler West Returned Services League
where post-war crumbling clinker bricks
crack along the mortar
catch two roads in a conflict of planning
on an apex of land
and the latest front
for Thursday night BINGO
where an old rusted cannon empties
its monstrous silence to the streets
hedged now by an old badge
of red and white tea-roses
a strange march of opposites
in the battle for a brand of history
that even at their best
stand only for a struggle to remember
and a century of wars
that soon will be too easy to forget.
