Doves in Jerusalem

In my childtime
once I lived there:
sky-high was cheaper
up eighty-nine stairs
Apes in the treetops
we envied the birds
their swooping and soaring
--but doves are different.
From my sixth-floor window
day after day I watched them
trample the roof below,
heard them
incessantly calling:
always restless -
coming going
to and froing
fluffgrey fusspots
with skinnypink feet
trampling the slates
non-stop.

The years went by
cooing...

They smashed the slates
and wrecked the roof.
These are dangerous birds:
in time
they break through stone

Perhaps peace stands a chance.
