GD Anderson

Beluga Whale in Vancouver Aquarium

body is
fusiform in shape/
robust/ steering in an
unending arc through the deep
concrete pool/ time as circular/
her puffy doughboy face seemingly
smiling- there she is again- circling
under the thick glass pane/ an
advertisement of sorts for passing
tourists/ her creamy white
pectoral flippers steering like
small rounded paddles/ the blue
neon backwash slashing/ the
whale's tough melon veering
past us again/ her small
impenetrable eyes
scanning her
weary
cage

My Australian credits include Social Alternatives, LinQ, New England Review, Stylus Literary Journal, Five Bells, Swyntax, FreeXpreSsion, Pixel Papers, Divan, The Mozzie, the Illawarra Mercury Magazine and various anthologies. I edit and publish the student literary journal Ephemeral and featured in a Bulletin article by Maxine McKew on 8 April 2003.
