Artist's Statement: My work begins with chaos and uncovers the hidden. I paint from the unconscious. This selection of paintings is drawn partly from my upcoming exhibition at Groundfloor Gallery, in Balmain, Sydney , June 24th -July 15th and partly from my previous work. As a child I would spend hours trying to unravel a pathway surrounding our home. I would try to link the connecting paths. I wanted to cover every step without having to backtrack or repeat myself. My work is still to do with the essence of that childhood dreaming. I am seeking to untangle the unconscious web of my personal mandala. In this way I concentrate on placing each element in the position it has to sit to tell my story. I strive to create suggestive surfaces with a hint of the hidden - beyond appearances, beyond the literal - in order to deal with more abstract concerns. Life seems to be about the small day to day patterns that define who we are and the subtle shifts that occur that, in turn, can broaden and redefine our sense of self.

About the Artist Deborah Young

Deborah Young graduated from the National Art School in 1989. She has also studied Old Masters' techniques at the Charlie Sheard Studio School. Deborah's works have been purchased by Art Bank, the Commonwealth Government, and a growing number of private collectors. Deborah was commissioned by the architects Indyk and Associates to create a four panel 8.8m x 1.04m oil on linen painting as part of the refurbishment of the Sackville Hotel in Rozelle, Sydney. Her triptych "Ley Lines" is a feature of Moog Hotel, Darlinghurst. She is currently working on a series of paintings for inclusion in "Weapons of Mass Sedition", a cross-arts performance by spoken word electronica duo, The Cube.
