first strike
how can there be a war on terror?
you might as well invade fear
if you could annexe horror,
then you could rape disgust
if you could take bewilderment by coup,
you could surrender agony
you could occupy disfigurement
you could annihilate common sense |
About the Poet Jen Jewel Brown
|
Previously known as Jenny Brown (while on staff at Planet, The Digger, Rolling Stone and Nation Review), Jenny Hunter Brown (on staff at Sunday Telegraph and RAM - Rock Australia Magazine - which she edited for a few issues when editor Anthony O'Grady was overseas) and Zesta (Nation Review). Brown's first poetry reading was at La Mama in 1971, the same year she joined the staff of fractious weekly independent paper Planet (sadly closed down by the Melbourne Vice Squad). She's a songwriter represented on Dragon's O Zambezi, and has worked behind the scenes with some of Australia's greatest bands, including Yothu Yindi and The Church, both of whom she signed to Mushroom when artist & repertoire manager there in the late 80's. She's interviewed Bob Hawke, gone on the road with The Rolling Stones and been employed as a Sex & Sense editor. She's currently on staff with Mediaweek and freelancing. Her performance poem Unwilling (2003), televised on Channel 7 and 10 news, was a response to John Howard's announcement that Australia would join the "coalition of the willing" in Iraq. Brown lives in West Heidelberg, with her two kids and two dogs. |
