Thylazine: The Australian Journal of Arts, Ethics & Literature
Submission Guidelines
Thylazine accepts submissions from Australian contributors via email or registered postal mail. All text is to be attached as a single Word document or sent in the body of the email. Graphics to be sent as jpg attachments. Photos may be sent via registered post for scanning upon prior arrangement. The deadline for submissions is 1st March (1st June issue) each year. All work must be IBM compatiable. A description of the kind of material that Thylazine: The Australian Journal of Arts, Ethics & Literature is seeking to publish is listed below.
Please make sure that you understand Thylazine's Submission Guidelines and General Terms and Conditions before submitting your material. If your work is accepted you will need to print out and fill in a legal contract. Payment will be made upon the completion of the work and the signing of the contract. If sending material via mail please register all photos and include return postage to; The Thylazine Foundation GPO Box 1480 Darwin NT 0801 Australia. Any material sent without registered return postage will not be returned.
1) Thylazine's Commissioned Articles: Thylazine seeks to publish articles of 4,000 words and above plus images on Australian poetry, performance, visual arts, fiction, landscape, biography, philosophical, activism, indigenous, disability, social themes, autobiographical, animal, travel themes - within Australia and overseas and other areas of special interest, with a strong emphasis on indigenous Australian people and culture. Six articles are published per issue. Previously published articles are okay with appropriate acknowledgment given however we do not pay for them. A token payment of 300.00 for Thylazine No.12 is being offered for 4,000 words and over - longer articles welcome! (plus 6 or more images - artwork/photos).

2) Thylazine's Featured Artists and Photographers: Thylazine seeks submissions of a selection of 12-24 pieces of visual art (photography, digitial manipulation, sculpture, visual art, textiles, film stills, photo essays etc) by new and established Australian artists, new works or that provide a retrospective of the artist's work. Animal and/or landscape themes are welcomed although not necessary. One artist to be published per issue. Previously published, sold or exhibted artworks are okay with appropriate acknowledgment given. A token payment of 150.00 is offered.

3) Thylazine's Australian Poets Series: Thylazine seeks submissions of a selection of 10-12 poems by new and established Australian poets from which 4-6 will be chosen for publication. Animal and/or landscape themes are welcomed although not necessary. Twelve poets are published per issue. Previously published or performed poems are okay with appropriate acknowledgment given. A token payment of 50.00 for the selection is offered.

3) Thylazine's Australian Poets At Work Series: Thylazine seeks submissions of a selection of 6-10 poems by new and established Australian poets from which 4 poems will be chosen for publication. Animal and/or landscape themes are welcomed although not necessary. The series includes 8 questions answered by Australian poets in a mini-interview. Twelve poets are published every so often. Past poets who have featured in this series include; Alison Croggon, John Kinsella, Liz Hall-Downs, John Tranter, Judith Rodriguez,Peter Skrzynecki, Tracy Ryan, Komninos Zervos, Jan Owen, Grant Caldwell, Jennifer Strauss and Philip Hammial.
Previously published or performed poems are okay with appropriate acknowledgment given. A token payment of 50.00 for the selection is offered.

4) Thylazine's Australian Poetry Book Reviews: Have your publisher submit a copy of your latest book for possible review. Twelve poetry books are reviewed per issue, including the occasional work of literary fiction, photography, non-fiction, drama or visual art. Hard paper books, ebooks, chapbooks, limited editions, anthologies and literary magazines are welcome! Contributions to this section are considered all year round. Please note; 1) We do not return review copies of books, 2) We are unable to individually contact every publisher or poet who sends a book in order to acknowledge receipt, 3) We do not guarantee a review because a book is sent and 4) We do not contact the poet in advance to tell them if their book will be reviewed. All publishers will be notified once the review appears.

Submission Guidelines
1) Thylazine's Australian Artists and Writers Directory:
The Thylazine Foundation Resource and Information website promotes free access to arts, ethics and literature both within Australia and world wide as part of its ongoing educational and charitable work. We are pleased to announce that as from 1st January, 2005 all Australian poets, artists, writers and other creative practitioners are being offered a complimentary listing in The Thylazine Foundation's Australian Artists and Writers Directory. The Thylazine Foundation offers a free space for all Australian artists and writers; including painters, singers, photographers, musicians, actors, poets, film makers and other creative practitioners including free updates of all details. Please note that donations are welcome to cover costs involved in maintaining Thylazine's Artists and Writers Directory and The Thylazine Foundation Resource and Information website.
How To Obtain A Free Listing Thylazine's Australian Artists and Writers Directory:
i) Submit a 300-500 word biography. This description may include autobiographical details, poetic influences and other areas of personal interest such as; awards, magazine publications, teaching experience, grants, festivals, appearances at art & craft shows, anthologies (ed), works in progress, television appearances, residencies, radio appearances, forthcoming publications, influences etc. If you have a website where further information is available including contact details of where your published books or creative works can be ordered please include them. Otherwise feel free to list a website where your work can be found.
ii) Send a photograph via email. The Thylazine Foundation scans photos for artists and writers who have not got access to the latest electronic equipment free of charge, so long as return postage (via Australian registered post) is provided for same. Please include the photographer's details and the year that the photo was taken.
iii) Include your book publications or creative achievements, novels, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, gigs, photography, self publised books, theatre, exhibitions, children's books, films, anthologies (ed), scripts, music cd, criticism, exhibitions, performances, etc.
iv) Include your contact details; in the form of an email, website address, postal box address and let us know whether you would like them included in your listing. Please note: Residential and street addresses will not published online. The Thylazine Foundation does not give out personal details of any artists or writers appearing on its information and resource website, including those who have been previously published in Thylazine.
Please note: Thylazine's Australian Artists and Writers Directory is a community effort promoting free access to information and culture in Australia. We welcome volunteer researchers and contributors. So if you think that someone needs to be included, who isn't there already, then feel free to provide their details. We also ask that you submit your own details in the same way that the directory entries appear online. Lastly, we are not a literary agency and nor do we hand out personal contact details to the public. If you would like to be contacted by festival organisers, overseas publishers, researchers and anthologists, you will have to include your email contact address in The Directory. In the past, creative practitioners have missed out on opportunities for paid work and overseas representation because these details have not been provided or were missing. Thank you.

2) Australian Artists and Writers for Peace: The Thylazine Foundation seeks email submissions of artwork, photography, sculpture, lyrics, poetry, fiction and non-fiction and other creative works that most represent peace, love, beauty and friendship, so that together we are creating a world where all unnecessary suffering will be a thing of the past. This section is open to all Australian artists and writers and other creative thinkers who care about a world in crisis and who seek to empower themselves and others. Previously published work is acceptable with appropriate acknowledgments. Please include your creative work, a 300-500 word biography and a photo including the photographer's details and the year that the photo was taken if available. Please note that changes to photographs/and or text will not be made to the Australian Artists and Writers for Peace, once the work has been published online.

3) Australian Artists and Writers for the World: The Thylazine Foundation seeks email submissions of artwork, photography, sculpture, lyrics, poetry, fiction and non-fiction and other creative works with the purpose of initiating positive personal and social change, so that together we are creating a world where unnecessary suffering for all beings will be a thing of the past. This section is open to all Australian artists and writers and other creative thinkers who care about a world in crisis and who seek to empower themselves and others. Previously published work is acceptable with appropriate acknowledgments. Please include your creative work, a 300-500 word biography and a photo including the photographer's details and the year that the photo was taken if available. Please note that changes to photographs/and or text will not be made to the Australian Artists and Writers for the World, once the work has been published online.

5) The Thylazine Foundation Photo Gallery: Submit up to 40 photographs or artworks with captions on themes related to animals, the environment or humanitarian issues, particularly those involving the exploitation of people, other animals and the environment occurring within Australia. The gallery also seeks to honour inspirational success stories of those who help to make the world a better place by acting locally.

6) The Thylazine Foundation Notice Board: The Thylazine Foundation Notice Board is a Live Journal with public access created for creative artists to post news of scheduled tours and events, such as book and magazine launches, exhibition openings, announcements of prizes and awards, festivals, performances and gig guides, readings and workshops, radio and television broadcasts of creative arts, review book give-aways and the latest news from the creative arts community in Australia. The Notice Board welcomes calls for submissions from magazines, journals and publishers for Australian content from around the world. The Notice Board can also be used for posting email actions and petitions on behalf of those less fortunate in which we can all participate. We also invite inspiring stories or quotes from creative artists who are making a positive difference in the creative arts community, to their local community and to the world by the initiation of their own creative projects and charitable acts. All positive, supportive, challanging and creative contributions are welcome!

7) Links: The Thylazine Foundation welcomes reciprocal links with other websites or a like-minded nature (who do not charge a fee) in order for the public to access information. Are you a literary or arts journal, a writers or arts centre, an artists and/or writers retreat, an independant publisher of literary, art or photography books, an ethical organisation or a website promoting an ethical vegan lifestyle operating in Australia or overseas? If so The Thylazine Foundation would be pleased to exchange links.

Terms and Conditions
Subscription: Thylazine is a free online annual arts and literary magazine that is published on 1st June each year or whenever funds for the issue have been raised. It is recommended that you bookmark the website and drop in whenever you feel like reading some good quality Australian arts and literature with a high content of quality graphics and an ethical slant.
Copyright: Information published in Thylazine or displayed on The Thylazine Foundation Information and Resource website remains copyright to individual writers and artists to whom the material belongs. Material may not be displayed, published, reproduced, or used for any other purpose without prior permission of the writer, artist and/or the supplier of the material, where the former is unavailable. For further information we recommend that you contact The Australian Society of Authors.
Rights and Permissions: The contributor grants Thylazine once off permission to publish new and/or previously published articles, essays, excerpts, poetry, fiction and accompanying graphics in Thylazine for a period of twelve months with all copyright remaining with the contributor. Thylazine is archived by The Thylazine Foundation Resource and Information website and may also be archived and by various public and state libraries both in Australia and overseas. Please note: As part of this agreement, The Thylazine Foundation stipulates that a commissioned article (or work where the contributor has been paid) not be republished until at least six months after the due publication date, in which case an acknowledgment would be appreciated.
Please note that from January 1st, 2006 Thylazine will rely on donations from the creative arts community/ and the general public. If in the event Thylazine does not appear on the due publication date, due to a lack of donations or incoming funds from the website, then the contributor is free to offer and publish the work elsewhere twelve months from the due publication date.
Previously Published Work: Thylazine reprints articles from other magazines with the permission and consent of the writer, artist and/or supplier and endevours to provide appropriate acknowledgment of the previous publication as a courtesy. Please note that Thylazine does not pay for previously published articles, unless they are reworked to the extent to make them a new article. Thylazine does offer token payment for previously published poetry, photos, graphics and visual artwork.
Deadlines:
The Thylazine deadline falls on 1st March for 1st June issue to be published each year. It is a requirement that all commissioned and general submissions be in by (or before) that date. Thylazine reserves the right to withdraw offer of publication and payment for any work (including previously commissioned work) that does not meet the stated deadline.
Payment: Payment is made upon the publication of the issue in which the work is to appear, or can be made in advance upon the completion of the commissioned work, the sending of an invoice by the contributor and the signing of the contract by both parties. Please note that all offers of payment to contributors made by Thylazine include GST within the amount stated.
Invoices: The Thylazine Foundation requires either a Tax Invoice listing your name, address, what the payment is in relation to and an ABN Number. If you do not wish to supply an ABN number, then you must include a signed Invoice stating that your creative work is a hobby or include a Suppliers Note from the ATO (Australian Taxation Office) before payment can be made.
Archives: Any material accepted by Thylazine will stay on the front page for approximately twelve months or until the next issue is published, upon which it will be archived online. All issues of Thylazine are archived by The Thylazine Foundation Resource and Information website and may also be archived and by various public and state libraries both in Australia and overseas.
Privacy:
Thylazine does not divulge private information pertaining to its employees or contributors to the public. It is suggested that any general enquiries be directed to the individual, their publishers, managers or other agents and representatives.
Ethics in Content: The Thylazine Foundation reserves the right to reject any material that they believe consists of racist, sexist or speciesist language or other language of derogatory description or unwarranted and unnecessary discrimination, or where the content contains undertones that may be misleading or defamatory in nature. Thylazine and The Thylazine Foundation were established to operate from an ethical principal and to explore ethics, where no life is degraded or suffers through the pursuit of human knowledge, creative art or entertainment. Your consideration of these fundamental principals is appreciated.
