In January 2009, The Rylstone Ten and a brown horse named Cody, made their way from the property where they had been for ten years, to a sanctuary of personalised care at Edgar's Mission Farm Animal Sanctuary in Willowmarvin, Victoria, Australia.
Pam Ahern who runs Edgar's Mission has provided a permanent place that they will now call home, where they are currently on agistment next to the mission.
The Rylstone Ten had been living on a 200 acre property four hours west of Sydney for many years, through some of Australia's worst drought on record for that area.
Cody makes his way down the ramp into his new life! I am thrilled that they are finally to have a home where they will be closely looked after and loved.
An animal transport was arranged and so the cows and Cody made their big trip from Duck Crossing in Rylstone down the Hume Highway to their new home.
Pam writes, "They belong down here with us."
The 'girls' look a bit nervous after their big road trip. The cows are a close knit family herd of mothers, daughters and one son named Caliban.
Caliban and his very large horns in the holding pen.
The cows were also joined by a horse named Cody. Cody's mother Sygo had died many years before back at the Rylstone property, leaving him alone with the cows. So of course we couldn't leave him behind ...
Cody enjoying his new surroundings.
Cody immediately made friends with two of Edgar's Mission's other horses, who are also on agistment next door.
Pam writes, "Cody and his new buddies, the white horse is Frostie, an ex racehorse, he actually raced in Darwin and suffered terrible injuries but was never properly treated so now he walks with a limp but is still a very happy fellow and the little bay mare is his girlfriend Diane, they are spending their summer together.
Cody is still with his cow friends but likes to hang out with the horses."
It is heart warming to see Cody mixing with other horses again after so many years of being alone out at Rylstone.
To think that if these lovely animals hadn't come under my care all those years ago, they would all be dead now. It has been a priviledge to care for them.
They will not be just another slaughterhouse statistic, like so many other unfortunate black angus cows, who are murdered daily, so human beings can eat their flesh.
Not for these beauties ....
... including Stevie who was found to have a twisted horn that had started to grow into her cheek. This is currently being attended to by a local vet.
Cody has a moment of staring off into the dreamy-eyed distance of blue sky and fields and fields and fields ....
As the Edgar's Mission slogan goes, "If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others, why wouldn't we?"
And so when one chapter closes another one opens ... hence a new, strange and perfect life for Cody, Molly, Millie, Amanda, Maguerite, Ruby, Rache, Caliban, Faith, Emma, Stevie and Pushkin (the Angel cat from Darwin) under the permanent care of Edgar's Mission Farm Animal Sanctuary in Willowmarvin, Victoria, Australia.
