The infamous Cat Tree of William Creek sits on the Oodnadatta Track just outside the tiny town of William Creek in South Australia. The mulga has a dozen dead feral cats hanging from its branches and is said to be "sprouting more fruit" by the week.
The decaying cats who have been hung up by their back legs are meant to be a grim warning to tourists who might be travelling through the district with their companion cats and dogs.
The locals at William Creek are not saying who is responsible for the cat tree, but there is strong support throughtout the region to wipe out feral cats. The geneocide of introduced animals in outback Australia is always the first solution to a greater problem, even when it has been shown to fail time and time again.
Whilst I was photographing the ominous cat tree the stench of decaying flesh was overwhelming. The flies moved from the corpses of the dead cats onto my arms, wrists and shoulders and then back to the cats again.
The locals of William Creek want these so called 'cat trees' to start sprouting their macarbe fruit throughout Australia. For any complaints regarding this animal cruelty people should contact the Coober Pedy Shire Council in outback South Australia.
