Joyce Parkes (1930 - )

Subsequently she felt impelled to publish three books of poetry written by other writers. Though only two reached publication, one book was received with critical acclaim in The Bulletin and in the Sydney Morning Herald. She is a Member of the Fellowship of Australian Writers Writers' Centre, WA; a Member of the W.B. Yeats Society, WA; a Member of the Australian-Irish Heritage Association. Somewhere along the line Joyce also committed herself to being a Member of the Discrimination Committee of Western Australia, her brief: Employment; Editor of the Fellowship of Australian Writers, WA (Inc.); Archivist and President of International PEN-Perth Centre, WA. Joyce Parkes has a mention in the Who's Who of Australian Writers, first edition, D.W.Thorpe 1991, ISBN 0909532 81 8; in the Who's Who of Australian Writers, second edition, D.W. Thorpe, 1995, ISBN1 875589 20 1; and in the 14th International Authors and Writers Who's Who, International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England, ISBN 0948875 81 X. Joyce is an Australian writer with a Jewish-Dutch-Javanese accent.
She began to write poetry on the 13th June, 1975, W.B. Yeats's 110th birthday, experiencing a natural high, after a 45-year long depression. Among earlier influences on her writing, apart from friends, foes, and family, were the works of Anton Chekhov; Herman Hesse; Victor Hugo; Bertrand Russell; Oscar Wilde; Charles A. Reich; W.B. Yeats; Edna O'Brien; Virginia Woolf; Emily Dickinson; Marianne Moore; Saul Bellow; Simone de Beauvoir; Santayana, Guillevic; Germaine Greer, Patrick White, before beginning to read other, truly excellent, Australian writers. In December '03 and January '04 Joyce will read, it's almost certain, Overland 4/2003; Meanjin 4/2003; The New England Review 2/2003; The Point, by Marion Halligan; What Darkness Covers, poems, by the Irish poet Tony Curtis. In 2004 J.P. published a Review of the book What Darkness Covers, by Tony Curtis, in The Journal of the Australian-Irish Heritage Association. She has also completed a term as a Member of the Cultural and Arts Policy Committee (the CAP-Committee) of Western Australia. Joyce Parkes's publications include: Poetry: (as J.E. Dorothy Porter (1954 - )
Crete, her first collection of poetry since 1989, has been breaking sales records for poetry and even running into the Australian newspaper's bestseller list. Crete was also shortlisted for the 1996 National Book Council Banjo awards and the Colin Roderick award 1997. In 1999 she published a new verse novel, What a Piece of Work (Picador 1999) set in Sydney’s Callan Park Psychiatric Hospital during the 1960’s. A play based on this book has been chosen for the Griffin Theatre’s 2000 season. Dorothy Porter has published six collections of poetry, four verse novels. Her verse novel, What a Piece of Work, was the first book of poetry fiction to be short-listed for the Miles Franklin Award in 2000.

Ron Price (1944 - )
He has worked as an editor, with unemployed youth, as an adult educator, in public relations, in a tin mine, as a taxi driver, indeed, too many jobs to include in this short space. His poetry has appeared in a dozen journals, magazines and newspapers. He has published more than 150 essays, of more than 800 words each, in newspapers, magazines and journals. His poetry, some 6000 poems and more than two million words, is also kept in a dozen libraries in Canada, Australia, Israel and the U.K. Ron has just finished writing an 80,000 word book on the poetry of a Canadian poet Roger White (1929-1993) and two publishers are currently considering it for publication. His website features 250,000 words, of poems, essays and interviews, mostly about poetry. Ron Price has collections of poetry in international Ba'hai libraries.
