About the Artist Isabel Milham
|
Isabel Mina Helen Milham was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1907. The family moved to NSW, Australia when she was two years old. At sixteen, Isabel won a scholarship to East Sydney Technical College and a monetary grant of 30/- ($3.00) and so began her art career. As she put it - she started drawing with charcoal - hundreds of skulls, skeletons and just bones. The next step was plaster casts and figures and then to life classes - still with charcoal. Due to family commitmments Isabel had to give up her art studies and it was, amazingly, 50 years later, at the age of 67, that Isabel resumed painting and studying and so began a new and exciting life with many exhibitions (drawing on her experiences during her travels both here and abroad) culminating in a very successful exhibition in January 1985 at the then ANZ Exhibition Centre in Martin Place, to benefit her favourite charity - The House With No Steps. Isabel continued to paint until failing eyesight brought an end to this wonderful career. Isabel passed away at Newport in March 2001 at the age of 93 years. |
